Situated on the stunning Trotternish peninsula of Skye, The Byre provides high quality accommodation that sleeps four in two en-suite bedrooms (1 king, 1 twin), and attained the highest grading, 5 stars, from VisitScotland, Scotland’s national tourist board. The cottage is a warm and welcoming ‘home from home’ in a lovely, quiet and peaceful location, off the beaten track, with panoramic views to the sea, across the bay and beyond. Sit back and relax in comfort and watch spectacular sunsets unfold or the ships that go by. It’s a great base for walking with your dog. Nearby there are many places of interest, as the Trotternish is rich in history and renowned for its wild landscapes of beauty and wildlife. There are dark skies too, making it an amazing place for stargazing; on clear nights you may see the Milky Way and the magical Northern Lights.
The Byre is furnished to a high standard, with reclining settee and chairs, large smart TV, wood burner and underfloor heating, panoramic sea view, wet room, bath etc. It uses modern ‘green’ technology and energy to heat it and provide hot water. It has a fast, smart electric vehicle charger too – just let us know if you want to use it (electricity charged at the cost to us plus a £10 admin charge).
The Byre has:
- a very well equipped kitchen with hob, oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge freezer and Nespresso coffee machine;
- a utility room that contains a washing machine, electric clothes dryer, iron and ironing board;
- full, fast fibre broadband internet via wi-fi throughout the property.
We do not have a specific changeover day. Feel free to come for as many nights as suit you; just ask for a price for your stay if not quoted on our booking platform. Please note that we are dog friendly; up to 2 well behaved dogs are welcome too, just not on the beds or other furniture please.

There are lovely walks right from the door here too, along unspoilt coastline, to the famous Rubha Hunish bothy, and along the Skye Trail. Wildlife is still plentiful here; Golden and Sea Eagles, Sparrowhawk and Hobby may be seen from cottage, otters in the bay, with whales, basking sharks, dolphins and seals in the sea around us.
Our beautiful part of Skye, the Trotternish peninsula has a lot to offer visitors. There are many ‘must see’ sites close by, most within 15 minutes and all within 30 mins drive including: the spectacular Quirang and the Trotternish ridge, the Old Man of Storr, the Museum of Island Life, the resting place of Flora MacDonald (of Bonnie Prince Charlie fame), the ruins of Duntulm Castle (ancient seat of Clan MacDonald), dinosaur footprints, a lovely beach at Staffin, and the ferry to the Outer Hebrides from Uig. See photos of some of these below:
Excellent cafes and restaurants are a short drive away. There is a takeaway cafe, Bûrr, that you can walk to too. Portree, the main town on the island is 45 minutes drive away, but expect to stop a lot to take in the views, as it is a spectacular drive. There you can buy Scottish fare of fresh fish, meat etc. as well as going to the cinema and live events. We provide information on the Skye places we like to visit, and to eat and drink.
Wildlife tours, a trip to the Outer Hebrides or even St. Kilda or the Cuillin mountains can all be done from here. There’s coasteering, e-biking, mountain walks and other Skye adventures for the more energetic. Or simply kick back, switch off and enjoy the view.
The maximum occupancy is 4 persons. Sorry, no children under 12 unless by prior agreement and no smoking in either property.
